The mega art festival Art Macao has hit Macao, bringing cultural activities and art exhibitions to many corners in the city. The core event “Art Macao: International Art Exhibition” has invited international resorts and hotels in Macao to participate in the art fiesta, which brings incredible art pieces from both home and overseas to the city to showcase the charm of modern visual art.
In last issue, we invited representatives from Melco Resorts & Entertainment Ltd., MGM, Sands China Ltd. and Wynn Macau Ltd., to share with us the special elements and highlights of their exhibitions. In this issue, we have invited Galaxy Entertainment Group and Sociedade de Jogos de Macau, S.A. (SJM) to share their experience on organising exhibitions.
SJM: “ART．Appreciation．Legacy” Art Exhibition
SJM organises the “ART‧Appreication‧Legacy” Art Exhibition for Art Macao. This exhibition is comprised of seven different smaller exhibitions with very different themes. It showcases masterpieces from over 100 years old to modern art pieces from renowned artists including Eugène Henri Paul Gauguin, Wu Guanzhong and many other artists from Portuguese-speaking countries and China. Graduation art projects and modern glass art from art major students from Macao and abroad are also displayed at the exhibition. The art collections available for appreciation range from western oil paintings to East-Asian lacquer paintings, from graphic design works to multimedia visual arts and glass sculptures.
Starting from June to October, besides enjoying the painting collection from the five-month exhibition at the Grand Lisboa’s hotel lobby, visitors can also appreciate multimedia visual arts on the TV screens in Grand Lisboa’s hotel rooms and at outdoor venues in August. In October, the company will invite artist Meng Shu to create glass art themed on universe and integrate it into the Michelin restaurants in the hotel. “This is the first time for Macao to combine art exhibition with a dining space,” SJM’s Managing Director and Chief Administrative Officer Angela Leong On-kei said. “We are hoping to gather delicate art creations from all over the world and bring them to the audience. We want the audience to appreciate art through different senses such as visual, hearing, touch and taste. Through this, we can truly realise the values of art appreciation and preservation.”
Quite a number of tourists will come all the way to the hotel just for the art collection that is being displayed at the hotel. SJM makes full use of Hotel Lisboa’s brand value and coordinates multiple promotion channels to promote the exhibition, building different art exhibition media. The 4th Y Show, hosted at the Regency Art Hotel, is unique for its special value. “There are a number of young artists with great potential in Macao. We organise this exhibition at the Regency Art Hotel to provide art major graduates from Macao and overseas with a platform to show their potential,” Leong pointed out. “We want to let more people see the emerging art power in the city and preserve our culture.”
SJM’s tradition in collecting art pieces started with Dr. Stanley Ho Hung-sun’s first collection in the 1970s. SJM has since been dedicated to bringing traditional culture in Macao to the life of ordinary people living in the city, seeing culture and art as indispensable parts of local lifestyle and community. “We believe that by sharing art collections with historical value to the public we can achieve cultural preservation,” Leong said. “As a local enterprise of Macao, we are hoping to help Macao become a unique contributor to cultural development.”
